European startups that try to combat fake news

Fake news about Brexit, about terror attacks, about climate change, about counterfeiting, about the Coronavirus, about fraud or about anything, in general, is a phenomenon that in the past few years have increased in numbers in the whole world. These may be scattered intentionally or accidentally, we might never find out.

More and more people have access to internet, which results in people being more active on social media, helping the spread of fake news. The fast pace of this growth has made governments and even the private sector take steps in combating fake news, trying to stop it. In the following part, we’re going to show you some European startups, which have a prominent role in the fight against fake news.


1. Logically

Once an article is shared, the technology behind the application, called Logically, selects the most important statements from the text. If these statements are not true, the program notifies you, otherwise it will continue searching to prove it’s authenticity. The application has a function that groups and ranks articles. The startup, which is based in London, was created in 2017 and it has grown into a company that employs 70 people from the United Kingdom and India.



2. Right of Reply

Right of Reply has created a platform, where people have a possibility to regain control of their searches on the internet, of their responses and posts. The platform’s goal is to help users with their personal online content, so they don’t write false facts, and to try to find a solution against online attacks on social media. Right of Reply has been registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2016.



3. Factmata

The company, called Factmata, has developed a context-understanding algorithm. The project is lead by communities and experts, who want to lower the number of online misinformation and the cases of abuse that happens on the internet. The unique algorithms, combined with the use of Artificial Intelligence, group content and create platforms, which help fight problems in the media. Factmata started in 2017, and has it’s headquarters in London.



AdVerif.ai offers content examination solutions to advertisers, to publishers and to advertising networks, with the goal to keep the number of spam, malware and deceptive content low. This startup has an Artificial Intelligence as it’s base, which uses semantic text analysis of all advertisement technologies, in order to accomplish it’s intent. The company was created in 2017 in Amsterdam.



5. Alto Analytics

Alto Analytics is a huge data analyzer, which tries to discover digital patterns and connections, in order to fight against disinformation, counterfeit, brand reputation, safety of commercial information and to analyze the connection between online and offline. It’s purpose is to help public, private and nonprofit organizations across the world. The company is online since 2012.



6. Trueinchain

This Italian startup has been established in 2017. With the help of blockchain, it tracks down fake news and by a single click it can mark them. They look for fake news then they take them apart and analyze every piece of information in order to prove its falseness.



7. nwzer

This is a news agency powered by AI and blockchain. It has been going since 2017, it was started in the city of Maastricht. In 2018 the company received support from Google Digital News Initiative and since then they have been working on this cooperative internet-based tool to combat fake news.



8. Storyzy

Stroryzy classifies fake news, propaganda conspiracies with the help of their 100% automated content analyzing technology. Their unique technology objectively dissects the URLs of news sources and then rates them, again, in an objective manner. This Parisian company was founded in 2012.



9. Mindzilla

The company called Mindzilla tries to solve the world’s toughest informational problems with the help of AI and blockchain. The startup understood the fact that nowadays it is very hard to see the world without it being overshadowed by poorly framed stories, incomplete analyzes, self-serving content, fake news and through a vortex of poor access to specialized information. Their AI system takes into consideration human judgement and bias when it determines the relevance and accuracy of information. The company was founded in 2018.
